Self-Funded Teaching Programmes encompass all “non-mainstream” teaching activities conducted by the University. However, the SFTPs in the School are part of the University’s approved by the quality accreditation board. The School of Management, Information Technology, and Governance are the custodians of nine Self-Funded Teaching Programmes (SFTPs). The full complement of these programmes are offered on the Westville campus and seven of them are offered on the Pietermaritzburg campus.

The SFTPs are seen as both an auxiliary and integral component of the School. They provide access to undergraduate and postgraduate candidates, allowing them to attend convenient evening lectures. Consequently, candidates can pursue a tertiary qualification, after hours, from an established and acclaimed institution such as UKZN. The Bachelor of Business Administration degree is the sole undergraduate qualification on offer. The SFTPs also deliver three Postgraduate Diplomas and five Masters by Coursework degrees.

The programmes and modules offered are relevant and appropriate to prevailing management philosophy and practice and line up with current commerce and industry needs.

Specific SFTPs have an ongoing association with notable commercial organisations. These relationships allow for consultation around the rudiments and specifications of graduates that may be required by industry.

Teaching staff have endeavoured to achieve equivalence for modules that are common on both campuses. Equivalence is being achieved through meaningful collaboration amongst teaching counterparts in the following areas:

  • course content and outline,
  • prescribed textbooks,
  • assessment subject matter, weightings and format of assessments, and
  • External Examiners.

Teaching staff present a good academic profile, many of whom hold PhDs and some have link to the industry.

The current PGDip MSCM offering is a great offering. Some of the strengths of the programme include the overall UKZN reputation as a leading institution, the recognition of the academics on the program in the KZN community and the success of past students in their chosen fields.
